How to Install Starfield Script Extender (SFSE)

Starfield Script Extender SFSE How to Install

Before we start, SFSE only supports the release of Starfield on Steam. Sadly, it doesn’t support the versions on the Epic Game Store, Windows Store, or Xbox Game Pass. However, if you own the Steam version, you can download and install SFSE quite easily.

So, follow the below steps to install the Starfield Script Extender:

  • Firstly, head to the NexusMods to download the SFSE (link over here). You need to log in or create a new account on NexusMods if you don’t have one already.
  • Extract all the files to a preferred folder.
  • Copy all the dll and exe files where the Starfield is installed. The default path would be as follows:
    • Local Disk:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starfield\
  • Ensure to not paste the files into your Data folder.
  • You can ignore the src folder if you wish to.
  • Then, launch the game by running sfse_loader.exe but make sure that the Steam client is running.

Alternatively, you can directly install SFSE using the Vortex Mod Manager if you don’t wish to install it manually.

Vortex is a popular gaming mod manager for games such as Skyrim and other titles but whenever anyone tries to download mods from it, they get an error message that states “Download Failed” with a code 401. At other times, some users have also reported that they get another “Download Links Invalid” error while trying to download the Vortex mods. In this guide, we will tell you how to fix this Vortex downloading error on your Windows PC below.

Fix Vortex Download Failed 401 Error

Vortex download failed 401 error fix

If you are getting Vortex “Download Failed” 401 error, you can try to follow some fixes given below to resolve the issues: Logging out and Logging in again, the Nexus website server is down so wait for some time, or try to manually download the mods, etc.

1. Log out and Log in again in your Vortex account

To fix the download failed “Error 401”, you can first try to log out and log in again in your Vortex account. By completely closing down Vortex and relaunching it, something in the Windows system gets cleared which usually causes the download problems. So, try this sign-in and sign-out method first to fix the issue, if this doesn’t work then try the next workaround mentioned below.

2. Nexus Server Down

If the Nexus server is down or there is a huge update pending, you might face problems when you try to download any mods in Vortex. So, all you need to do is just wait for some time to get the Nexus website server running up again (for a couple of hours), and then try to download mods without any error message.

3. Manually Download Mods in Vortex

Another fix for the Vortex “Download Failed” 401 error is to manually download the mods and see if that resolves the issue. If this method works, then you can simply drag-and-drop the mod archives over to the Vortex mods tab, which is located at the bottom near “Drop Files”. But if you are not able to view the drop files, you can just select the up arrow which is located in the bottom right corner.

That’s everything you need to know about how to fix Vortex Download Failed 401 error. If this guide helped you in any way, check out our other guides to find out Failed to get a list of collections Errors, and more Mod articles on Gamer Tweak.

If you are facing the Starfield Mods not working issue, you cannot use or load any available Vortex mods from NexusMods. With Bethesda director, Todd Howard, confirming the in-game mod support, it’s a bummer that players are facing this issue. They can neither manually nor use the Vortex Mod manager to load any mods into the game. This issue might be due to the custom .ini files of Starfield failing to identify as well as modify with the game’s main executable file (.exe). But don’t worry as we have compiled some workarounds to resolve the Vortex mods not working issue in this game.

Fix Starfield Vortex Mods Not Working Issue

starfield vortex mods not working fix

Here are the best workarounds to fix the Vortex Mods not working issue in Starfield:

Check if the Mods Have Any Requirements

You can face this issue due to the lack of any required mod files in Starfield. As you head to the NexusMods, check if the loaded mods have any additional mods or required files to run. For that, check the description of your loaded mod on the site. If it does have any missing files, download (and install) them to resolve this issue.

Editing the StarfieldCustom.ini File

As it worked out for many players, you can edit the StarfieldCustom.ini file to resolve the mods not working issue.

  • For that, head to the main directory of Starfield. The default location or the path is as follows:
    • Documents\My Games\Starfield
  • As the file name is case-sensitive, ensure that it is named “StarfieldCustom.ini“.
  • Then, launch the StarfieldCustom.ini file using Notepad++ or simply Notepad.
  • Replace it with the following command text:
    • [Archive]
      bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
      sResourceDataDirsFinal=
  • Save the file and ensure that it’s not saved as a text file (.txt).
  • Also, head to the Properties and ensure it is set to Read-only.

Ensure that Mods are Saved Right

You can also face the Starfield mods not working issue if the loaded files are saved in the Steam folder. Due to that, the “.ini” files will fail to modify with the main executable file. So, paste all the mod files into My Games and the game’s main directory.

Enable the Hardlink Deployment in Vortex

The Hardlink Deployment method ensures that Vortex Mod Manager saves your mod files within the game’s main folder.

  • For that, you must launch the Vortex Mod Manager and head to Settings.
  • Then, select the Mods tab and choose the Deployment Method.
  • Enable the Hardlink Deployment to deploy your mod files correctly.
  • Finally, launch the game to check if your mods are loading and working.

That’s all about how to fix the Starfield Mods not working issue. If you found this guide helpful, check out our guides to find out if you should tell the cabinet, how to fix the Power from Beyond quest, and explore more Starfield Guides right here on Gamer Tweak.

Also Read | How to Install Mods

Achievement Enabler

The Achievement Enabler is the most essential mod if you want to utilize the various mods, cheats, and console commands in Starfield. Despite using the cheats, this mod allows you to earn achievements as you progress.

Enhanced Player Healthbar

With lots of space combat, tracking your health bar can be forgettable at times due to its minimalistic HUD. You can fix that problem by using the Enhanced Player Healthbar mod that dynamically changes the HP bar’s color when it depletes. It will alter your health bar’s color at 75, 50, and 25% displaying the colors you have chosen.

Run Forever Silently

While in space, the oxygen can often run out when the odds are against you. The Run Forever Silently is an ideal Starfield mod that offers you nearly unlimited oxygen as you run in silence.

Clear Bounties

The Clear Bounties is a perfect mod if you have the 5 big-time factions gunning you incessantly down due to the bounties placed on your head. All you must do is simply paste the bat file and use the correct console command for it.

Less Spongy Enemies

For the players that prefer exploration over combat, the Less Spongy enemies mod can help you get rid of all the damage-soaking hostiles. As the enemy NPCs gain a health bonus every time they level up, this mod allows you to tweak their health. While it only applies to the newly spawned enemies, a cell reset can entirely change their health pool.

Quantum Reshade

Although Bethesda’s Starfield has groundbreaking visuals and graphics, many players differ from this viewpoint. And that’s one of the major reasons, the Quantum Reshade mod was created by the modder named HelloImCrimson on NexusMods. Compared to the original, the colors are much more vibrant and offer an enhanced emulation.

Easy Speech

No matter what dialogue option you choose, the Easy Speech mod allows you to pass all the checks. As you progress, choosing the right dialogue for your character can sometimes be tricky. For such scenarios, lots of players prefer Save Scumming to get the required results. But if you are troubled by these various checks, Easy Speech can help you get out of the hassles.

Nicholas Cage Flashlight by Brandoman

Best Starfield Mods

Be it the surface world or space, you can find Nicholas Cage everywhere including Starfield. With modders splurring out their creative juices, you can try out the Nicholas Cage Flashlight mod whenever or wherever you feel lost in the dark. Once you install this mod, it will replace the vanilla flashlight with Nic Cage in his full glory.

Easy Digipick (Lockpick)

Here’s where the Easy Digipick mod can come to your rescue as it allows you to ignore the mini-game completely. While picking locks with Digipicks is a relatively easier gameplay mechanic, some players might want to skip the mini-game entirely. As it requires perks. you can instantly get the necessary rank by typing a console command – player.addperk 2ce2e2. However, this can disable your in-game achievements, so ensure installing the Achievement Enabler mod, as well.

Better Movement Speed

If you feel the jogging or sprinting motions are slightly off in Starfield, the Better Movement Speed mod can help you with a smoother experience. Further, this mod also offers a better experience when aiming with a mouse or controller.

More Flashlight Mods by Maquinaremos

For the players having fun with their flashlight mods, the modder maquinaremos upped their game with two mods. These include the Phil Spencer and Bill Clinton Flashlight mods that replace your vanilla flashlight. Alongside these funny mods, you can also try out the Sarah Barbie mod that replaces her outfit with a Barbie jacket.

The Eyes of Beauty

You will recognize the Eyes of Beauty mod if you have modded Bethesda’s Fallout and Skyrim. But unlike those mods, TEOB is an entirely different mod specialized only for Starfield. This mod offers new textures for your character’s mods replacing the original textures.

Undelayed Menus

The Undelayed Menus mod offers many improvements for quicker responsiveness and efficiency of Starfield’s in-game menu. This mod removes all the fading effects in the vanilla version and replaces them with a 60 FPS Menu refresh rate.

Garfield

Best Starfield Mods garfield

Just for the sake of the rhyme, the Garfield is one of the silliest mods in Starfield that we have discovered so far. It simply changes the game’s name to Garfield as the beloved orange tabby cat looms over the Main Menu.

Starfield Performance Optimization

Once you install the Starfield Performance Optimization mod, you can set the display settings to Ultra. When Todd Howard, the Starfield Director was asked if the game was optimized for PC, he answered you may need to upgrade your PC for this game. But for the players that can’t upgrade their PCs, this mod can save you with FPS drops. As stated by the DKNEXUS11, the creator of the mod, this mod offers more FPS and less graphics quality losses.

Cleanfield

For the Starfield players looking for a minimalistic Menu, the Cleanfield might be a perfect pick for you. This mod removes any intro videos with epilepsy or seizure warnings at the start of the game. Along with that, here are all the things Cleanfield mod offers:

  • No Bethesda Logo Video
  • No Bethesda Logo
  • No Message of the Day
  • No Starfield Logo
  • Customizable
  • Vortex Support

StarUI Inventory

Offering a compact display style, The StarUI inventory mod improves all inventory screens with Item category icons. With many quality-of-life features, this Starfield mod offers better Inventory Management to sort your items.

In-game FOV Changer

Although changing your Field of View is possible, the In-game FOV Changer mod allows you to permanently change the in-game FOV. With the limited FOV settings or options, many players felt the lack of this setting in the game. If you are one of those players, try out this mod to tweak your FOV in Starfield.

Mantis – Deadpool Recolor

Best Mods In Starfield

The Mantis – Deadpool recolor mod is a perfect pick if you are looking for some changes with your spacesuit. This mod replaces your Mantis outfit with a redesigned and recolored version of Deadpool’s superhero suit.

Responsive Grabbing

If you are tired of the one-second delay while grabbing resources or bodies, the Responsive Grabbing mod can help you cut down that time. This mod reduces that time to 300 milliseconds making it more responsive and faster to gather anything.

To get an even better experience of Starfield, you should install and use mods. The modding community never fails to come up with interesting things for games, especially for such big titles. You should find several mods that can do things like add or improve quality-of-life features and optimize performance. To get things like a recolor of suits or things that help you make the game easier like easy speech and digipicker mods. So here is how you can get started with them.

How to Install & Use Mods in Starfield

Install Mods For Steam And Xbox Game Pass Versions Of Starfield

There are two ways to install mods in Starfield, Manually and using Mod Manager. Here is how both methods work:

Manually Installing Mods in Starfield

To install mods, you should first make a mods folder in your root directory of Starfield. Here is where you will store most mods for both Steam and Xbox Game Pass versions of the game. Do note that mods usually are more compatible with the Steam version. So there is a chance some mods might be incompatible with the Game Pass version. Typically you should find root folders at the following locations:

  • Steam
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Starfield
  • Xbox Game Pass
    • C:\XboxGames\Starfield

After creating the mods folder here is what you do:

  1. Go to the mod page for the one that you want to install.
  2. Follow the instructions given by the mod creator.
    • Several mods just require you to unzip the downloaded mod file and paste the contents into the mods or root folder of Starfield.
    • Other mods can also make you install some other files or DLLs in different locations. Always make sure you get DLL files from trusted sources.
  3. Launch Starfield and if you followed everything correctly the mods should work with no issues.

Starfield already has a DLSS Mod but installing it can be a bit trickier. This Mod will replace AMD’s FSR2 Upscaling Display Setting. So those with Nvidia’s RTX Graphics Card can now sigh in relief. In this guide, you will learn how to download the latest DLSS Mod and install it easily on your PC. So take a look below to get started.

Note: Installing Mods to exploit a game’s parameter is unethical and we do not promote it. Moreover, it can cause harm to your PC, so we recommend you move ahead at your own risk.

How to Install DLSS Mod in Starfield

Firstly, make sure that you have downloaded and extracted the following files from Nexus Mods:

  • Starfield Upscaler (Download Standalone version)
  • UpscalerBasePlugin
  • DLSS DLL (Latest NVidia DLSS DLL is required)

Once done, follow the steps below to install them in Starfield:

  • Head over to your Starfield Install Directory.
  • Now, copy and paste all the content from the downloaded Starfield Upscaler folder.
  • In the game directory, you will see a folder called mods. Therein, you will be copy-pasting two .dll files, and here’s how:
    • Head over to the downloaded UpscalerBasePlugin folder and copy-paste (PDPerPlugin.dll) into the mods folder in the Starfield game directory.
    • Copy the downloaded Nvidia DLSS DLL (nvngx_dlss.dll) file and paste it into the mods folder as well.
  • You have now successfully downloaded the DLSS Mod in Starfield.

After downloading the DLSS Mod, make sure you don’t mess up with the settings as it may cause a lot of trouble. And to stay out of harm’s way, here’s how you can make the most out of the Starfield DLSS Mod.

How to Use DLSS Mod for Best Performance

Starfield DLSS Mod

Once you have downloaded the mod, launch the game and press the END key on your Keyboard. Doing so will open up a small menu from where you can switch a few settings. So, in the menu that appears, make sure that the Enable box is checked. Also, set the Upscale type to DLSS. Next, head over to the in-game Settings > Display tab and change the Upscaling option to FSR2. Don’t worry as the FSR2 setting’s functionality will be overwritten by DLSS.

The next thing you would want to do is adjust your Render Resolution Scale until you find your sweet spot. This will help you to gain maximum FPS performance with DLSS On. However, it is just a Mod so do not expect any massive changes in the Graphics.

That’s all you can do to install the DLSS Mod in Starfield. And now that you will be enjoying it better, we can provide you with more help through our Starfield Guides. For example, you can learn everything about Weapon Modding and Status Effects through our guides at Gamer Tweak. And if you are into modding, then we have plenty of Mod Guides stacked up as well.

Best Terraria Mods (2023)

Here are the best content and quality-of-life (QOL) mods for Terraria:

Calamity

best terraria mods

For players looking for more features, Calamity is a massive-sized content mod that adds many hours of endgame content within the vanilla progression. With a new class, structures, biomes, songs, and recipes, this mod also features more challenging difficulty modes. Furthermore, the Calamity mod adds over +1880 new items, +275 enemies, 24 bosses, six biomes, and post-moon Lord content into Terraria. All of this makes it one of the best Terraria Mods available right now.

Boss Checklist

best terraria mods

While playing modded Terraria, you can lose track of the in-game bosses to deal with. That’s where the Boss Checklist mod can come to your rescue as it supports mostly every popular mod. Soon as you beat a boss, this checklist will be updated accordingly giving you a track of the bosses you must defeat next.

Terraria Overhaul

Rather than adding new content to the game, Terraria Overhaul adds new gameplay mechanics and revamps the entire in-game content. Being a colossal-sized upgrade, this mod adds new seasons, emotes, player movement, and different gameplay systems like dodge rolls and more. While enhancing the gameplay, the Overhaul mod incredibly changes the various combat mechanics. Be it ranged, melee, or magic combat, this mod intricately makes the game more immersive.

Thorium

Like the Calamity and Overhaul mods, the Thorium mod adds another massive-sized content for Terraria. Alongside new bosses, enemies, and NPCs, this expansive mod adds three new classes with extensively balanced content. So, try out this mod if you are looking for fresh and challenging gameplay.

Mod of Redemption

Like all the massive content mods, the Mod of Redemption adds a variety of different new content into the game. But while adding new NPCs, bosses, and enemies, this content mod also adds events, lore, and several in-game vanilla changes. With a variety of new hard modes and Post-moon Lord bosses, the Mod of Redemption is a must-have for players looking for more difficulty.

How to Install Terraria Mods

You can download and install various mods by installing the tModLoader as a free DLC from the Steam website (link). Being an all-in-one mod manager, you can manage and use your mods more conveniently with the TML. As a community-made mod with consistent updates, it is also supported by the developer, Re-Logic. So, you don’t have to worry about any balance issues. Once you and your friends install the tModLoader, you can play Terraria altogether without any issues. But vanilla players won’t be able to join the players using TML.

Note that the tmodloader supports versions 1.3 as well as 1.4 and can be played alongside vanilla Terraria.
